About the role:

As a Senior Scientist I or II in the Pathology Preclinical Safety team you will perform (with minimal or no supervision) activities such as: specialized biomarker/immunology-based assays, data reporting and/or interpretation for non-GLP preclinical safety studies conducted by Laboratory Sciences. You will also provide quality testing and result verification while displaying good scientific judgement and communicate results and interpretations in an accurate and timely manner. Display high level of competence in use of laboratory equipment with experience in detailed maintenance and troubleshooting when required.

About the Role

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Perform technical procedures necessary to execute analytical aspects of preclinical study protocols. These procedures may include: specialized biomarker/immunology-based assays Ie (ELISA, ligand –binding assays), and/or QC activities. Interpret and communicate results.
  • Assist in the preparation of draft study protocols and reports.
  • Perform operation, calibration and troubleshooting of all laboratory instrumentation.
  • Utilize Preclinical Safety electronic data collection systems (e.g. PRISTIMA, Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN).
  • Assist in the maintenance of laboratory inventories and equipment.
  • Prepare and reviews raw data books for archiving.
  • Assist in method development and validation of new methodologies and instrumentation as needed.
  • At the Senior Scientist II level may present data to stakeholders within Preclinical Safety and/or across BioMedical Research.

Essential Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 5-6 plus years or Master’s degree and a minimum of 3 plus years relevant laboratory experience required.
  • To be considered at the Senior Scientist II level must have a Bachelor’s with 8 plus years of experience or Master’s degree plus 5 years. 
  • Life sciences or related degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated competence in operation, calibration and troubleshooting of laboratory instrumentation
  • Ability to independently maintain and use analytical instrumentation
  • Strong interpersonal, team-oriented and time management skills
  • Demonstrated experience in specialized biomarker/immunology-based assays and competency in all technical procedures.
  • Computer skills in Office software
  • Must have experience presenting data and ability to write technical reports to be considered at the Senior Scientist II level

Desirable Requirements: 

  • Experience in graphing and visualization software (GraphPad, Spotfire) desirable
  • Competence in the use of electronic data collection systems

This is a dual level posting. The final level and title of the offer role would be determined by the hiring team based on the skills, experience & capabilities required to perform the role at the level the role has been offered.

Novartis Compensation and Benefit Summary: The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between: $85,400 to $158,600/year at the Senior Scientist I level and $89,600 to $166,400 at the Senior Scientist II level; however, while salary ranges are effective from 1/1/25 through 12/31/25, fluctuations in the job market may necessitate adjustments to pay ranges during this period.  Further, final pay determinations will depend on various factors, including, but not limited to geographical location, experience level, knowledge, skills, and abilities. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
